Deep Tide TechFlow News, January 14th, Brazil Cryptocurrency Economy Association (ABcripto) new chair Julia Rosin (Júlia Rosin) recently stated that if the Brazilian government enacts a decree to impose a financial transaction tax (IOF) on stablecoin transactions, the association will file a lawsuit, arguing that this measure is unconstitutional. Rosin emphasized that according to Brazil’s Crypto Asset Framework Law (14.478/2022), stablecoins are not considered foreign currency, and the IOF tax applies only to currency exchanges, not to crypto asset transactions.

Rosin pointed out that stablecoins have already paid the IOF tax at the issuance stage, as they are based on traditional currency. ABcripto recommends establishing a working group to address any tax changes on crypto assets through legal amendments and broader social discussions. The association held a technical meeting with the Brazilian Ministry of Finance at the end of last year and presented these viewpoints.
