According to a letter signed by the finance ministers of five EU countries addressed to the European Commission, the five finance ministers are calling for a windfall tax on energy companies to deal with fuel price increases caused by the conflict involving Iran.

The finance ministers of Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria issued this call in a joint letter dated Friday, saying the move will show that “we are united and capable of taking action.”

In the letter, they wrote: “This will also send a clear message that those who profit from the consequences of war must do their part to ease the burden on the public.”
