US media: Trump says he is "deeply negotiating" with Iran and was once close to holding direct talks

ME News message, April 6 (UTC+8). In a telephone interview, U.S. President Trump said the United States is conducting “in-depth negotiations” with Iran, and that an agreement may be reached before the Tuesday deadline. “There is a very good chance of reaching an agreement, but if they don’t, I will destroy everything there,” he said. When asked whether he is concerned about harming innocent civilians, Trump said he believes Iranian people who oppose the government of their own country would support such strikes in order to weaken the regime. During an approximately 8-minute phone interview, Trump said that his special envoy Witkoff and Kushner are engaged in intensive negotiations with the Iranian side. Two people familiar with the negotiations said that communication takes place not only through intermediaries such as Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, but also through text messages between Trump’s advisers and Iran’s foreign minister Aragchi. “The negotiations are going smoothly, but dealing with Iranians will never be able to get all the way to the finish line,” Trump said. He also said that a few days ago, the two sides were at one point close to an agreement to hold direct talks. “But they said they would meet again in five days. I asked, why is it five days? I think they aren’t serious enough. So I attacked that bridge,” Trump said. (Source: PANews)
