Abstract generation in progress

OpenAI launched its two most capable small models to date on Tuesday: GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5.4 nano, dramatically narrowing the performance gap with its flagship models through lower latency and lower cost. GPT-5.4 mini fully outperforms the previous generation GPT-5 mini across core dimensions such as programming, reasoning, multimodal understanding, and tool calling, with running speed up more than 2x, and coming close to the larger GPT-5.4 in benchmark tests such as SWE-Bench Pro. GPT-5.4 nano is positioned as the lightweight option with the lowest cost and shortest latency; it is only available to developers via the API and is designed specifically for data classification, extraction, and simple programming sub-tasks. The launch of both models aims to fill the gap in real-time interactive scenarios where large models are difficult to deploy due to latency being too high, directly impacting fast-growing commercial markets including programming assistants, AI agent systems, and multimodal applications.
