The use of sea area for the Phase V project of Guangzhou Port Nansha Port Area has been approved by the State Council.
Guangzhou, March 26 (Reporter Cai Minjie) - On the 26th, the Guangzhou Port Authority announced that, with the approval of the State Council, the Ministry of Natural Resources has officially approved the marine use for the Phase V project of the Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port. This marks a key breakthrough for this major national project during the 14th Five-Year Plan, as the project officially begins construction, overcoming the final hurdle and injecting strong momentum into Guangzhou’s development as an international shipping hub.
It is understood that the Phase V project of the Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port is one of the 102 major projects included in the national “14th Five-Year Plan,” and it is also a significant construction project of the world-class port cluster in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. It carries the important mission of implementing national strategies and promoting regional collaborative development. The total estimated investment for the project is 14.447 billion yuan, which will construct four 200,000-ton container ship berths, 15 5,000-ton container barge berths, and five workboat berths, with an annual designed throughput capacity of 6.7 million TEUs. The preliminary works of the project commenced on August 8, 2025, and upon completion, it will work in coordination with the existing container terminals in the Nansha Port Area, further consolidating and enhancing Guangzhou Port’s position as a trunk port for containers, strengthening Guangzhou’s functions as an international shipping hub, and improving the overall international competitiveness of the port cluster in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
Currently, the Nansha Port Area has developed into the core port area of Guangzhou Port and the central area for Guangzhou’s construction as an international shipping hub, with the cumulative container throughput for 2024 officially exceeding 20 million TEUs, ranking among the top in the world for single port areas. The accelerated advancement of the Phase V project in the Nansha Port Area will further improve the terminal layout, enhance the comprehensive service capacity of the port, and provide solid support for Guangzhou’s development as a city of marine innovation and for Guangdong’s comprehensive construction of a strong marine province.
