In early February, an American-flagged oil transportation vessel, the Stena Imperative, was intercepted by six patrol boats belonging to the Iranian Navy while navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The incident, which occurred on February 3, was reported by American media sources and confirmed by a British maritime security company, marking another episode along the strategic route connecting the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

According to reports, the Iranian boats transmitted radio orders to the tanker’s captain, requesting the engine be shut down and preparations for an onboard inspection be made. However, the crew of the Stena Imperative chose to maintain speed and course, avoiding the approach. The decision resulted in a subsequent journey under the escort of a U.S. destroyer, with arrival scheduled at the port of Sitra in Bahrain for February 5.

Meanwhile, the Iranian news agency Fars presented an alternative version of the events, claiming that the boats intercepted the vessel for violating Iranian territorial waters without prior authorization. Iran’s stance reflects ongoing regional tensions and disputes over navigation rights in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical passage points for global maritime trade. Iranian patrol boats frequently intensify operations in this area, raising international concerns over security in shipping routes.
