Elon Musk: SpaceX Focuses on Building a "Self-Sustaining City" on the Moon Within 10 Years Instead of Mars
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, revealed that SpaceX has actually shifted its focus to building a "self-sustaining city" on the lunar surface, considering this goal achievable in less than ten years, compared to over twenty years to reach Mars.
Musk explained in a post on (x) that SpaceX's mission remains to expand awareness and life into space, noting that travel to Mars is only possible when planets align every 26 months, with a journey taking about six months, whereas trips to the Moon can be made every ten days in a journey that lasts no more than two days.
He added that these time differences make building a city on the Moon much faster than on Mars, emphasizing that although SpaceX will start working on building a city on Mars within five to seven years, the top priority is currently ensuring the future of civilization, and the Moon is the fastest option to achieve that.
