The U.S. Senate advanced a War Powers Resolution on January 8, 2026, with a vote of 52 to 47, limiting the president's ability to undertake further military action against Venezuela without congressional authorization.
Although the Senate is mostly controlled by Republicans, five Republican senators supported the resolution alongside Democrats, indicating that opposition to Trump's military policy is not only within the Democratic Party but also reflects some divisions within the Republican Party.
