I haven't graduated from Hong Kong University yet, but I have slowly stepped into the crypto world🌐.
There is a question that has always intrigued me: is it possible for the total market value of virtual currencies to surpass that of gold?
The first time I heard about Web3 was during my freshman year when I was renting a room in Hong Kong. My roommate's sister was working in Web3-related jobs in Hong Kong—though it was more about planning and promotion. At that time, the term was unfamiliar and vague to me, and I never really understood it.
Until my junior year, when I talked about Web3 with friends studying FinTech, they spoke more about blockchain technology and decentralized protocols, which are more technical aspects. Although it sounds very "high-tech," what I really want to understand is: does it have any investment value?
Until now, under the guidance of the team, I have gradually understood the ins and outs of cryptocurrency, the operational logic of Web3, and the mining mechanism, and I have also started to truly realize their investment potential.
The birth of Web3 was initially a vision of a community. It evolved from a seemingly abstract concept into a cohesive consensus that expanded its influence and even changed the world's understanding of currency and trust. From the early days when a few hundred bitcoins couldn't even buy a pizza, to today when one bitcoin is worth $110,000 - it has become "digital gold" in the eyes of many. At its core, it is the investment value brought by scarcity.
Currently, the total market capitalization of the entire virtual currency market is about $3.9 trillion, while the total market capitalization of physical gold worldwide exceeds $20 trillion. So the question arises: do you think the former will surpass gold one day?🤔
In the morning, I was still in the team researching the latest trends in the crypto world, and by the afternoon, I was back at the HKU laboratory, putting on a lab coat 🥼, wearing glasses, and seriously conducting a titration experiment on respiration.
These 12 hours seem to be a miniature reflection of my life: the intersection of finance and science, the fusion of the virtual and the real — I shuttle between these two completely different worlds, and in between, I slowly find my own rhythm.
