Since the topic of the financial messaging standard ISO 20022 has become popular, cryptocurrencies that support it have started to attract attention. The number of digital assets compliant with this standard announced by SWIFT is actually limited, but recent performance shows some interesting movements.
Bitcoin and Ethereum are not compatible with this standard. They were created in 2009 and 2015, respectively, so they existed before the standard was announced. On the other hand, Ripple's XRP is different. XRP, created in 2012, intentionally adopted ISO 20022 support. Because Ripple is a private company leading the effort, it was able to make such a decision.
There are surprisingly few cryptocurrencies supporting ISO 20022. The main ones include XRP, ADA, XLM, HBAR, ALGO, and IOTA. Others include QNT and XDC. About eight types are known in total.
Looking at recent price trends, quite interesting things are happening. As of October 2024, XRP was below $0.6, but following Trump’s victory, it surged to $2.7. Currently, it has adjusted to $1.39. ADA followed a similar pattern, rising from $0.4 to over $1.2, but now settling at $0.25. XLM went from $0.1 to over $0.5, but is now at $0.16. HBAR skyrocketed from $0.05 to $0.36, but is now at $0.09.
ALGO and IOTA have been struggling long-term. ALGO is down about 85% from its all-time high, and IOTA is down over 90%. However, modest signs of recovery have appeared since early 2025. ALGO has risen from $0.1 to $0.11, and IOTA from $0.1 to $0.05. Neither has recovered to their 2021 peaks, and while they may have potential, the long-term trend is clearly downward.
QNT and XDC are showing somewhat different movements. QNT is currently at $68.93, down 72% from its high. XDC is at $0.03, down 30% from its high. XDC rose from $0.03 to $0.09 after Trump’s victory but has since corrected. QNT rose from $56 to $165 between November and December but has fallen back below $120.
The transition to ISO 20022 began in 2022 and was scheduled to be completed by 2025. Since SWIFT’s interbank settlement system, which has been in operation for over 50 years, is being replaced by this new standard, all financial institutions need to support it. Considering this background, cryptocurrencies supporting ISO 20022 could theoretically have long-term demand. However, looking at current price adjustments, the market may have already anticipated this factor. Many people are likely tracking these tokens’ movements on Gate.io.
