OpenAI Appoints Former Airbnb Executive Emmanuel Marill to Lead EMEA Expansion

Gate News message, April 23 — OpenAI appointed Emmanuel Marill, former Airbnb executive, as managing director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) as the company expands in a region increasingly concerned about dependence on U.S. AI providers.

Marill previously held positions at Facebook and Groupon in France. The move comes as OpenAI grows its business sales abroad, facing scrutiny from European regulators over digital sovereignty and competing with Mistral AI, a France-based startup marketing itself as a European alternative. OpenAI reported that business subscriptions in EMEA rose sevenfold year on year, though the company did not disclose specific sales figures.

OpenAI is also hiring for additional roles including head of EMEA Product Partnerships to accelerate adoption across business, developer, and consumer channels. The hires and partnerships are designed to deepen OpenAI’s presence in Europe’s business and technology networks, addressing sovereignty concerns by establishing a stronger local footprint.
