Just found out there are some seriously valuable old bills still floating around out there. Like, if you somehow stumble on the right one in your wallet, you could be looking at some real money.
The craziest part? That largest US dollar bill ever made was the $1,000 note from 1861. Grover Cleveland's face is on it and if you find one in decent shape, collectors will pay anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 for it. I had no idea they even printed those.
Then there's the 1928 $500 bill with McKinley on it - worth like $1,000 to $1,500 depending on condition. They stopped making those in 1969 so they're pretty rare now. The 1950 $100 with Benjamin Franklin is probably the one you'd actually have a shot at finding, worth around $120-$150 if it's in good shape.
The weirdest ones are those 1934 $10 Silver Certificates. Most people think they're just regular tens, but if you look for the blue seal and check the condition, some of them with the lighter green seals can fetch $20-$35. They were only issued for like eight months out of Washington DC.
Obviously the condition matters a ton - that's what makes the difference between face value and actual collector price. Pretty wild that this stuff is still just... out there. Have you ever actually found any old bills like this?
