Sagrada Familia has reached a new height with the installation of the Jesus Christ tower
The famous Barcelona landmark, the Sagrada Família, has reached another significant milestone in its transformation process. According to media reports, the last major element of the Jesus Christ tower—the three-dimensional cross—has been successfully installed at a height of over 172 meters. This completion of the iconic tower’s exterior confirms its status as the tallest church on the planet and symbolizes tremendous progress in realizing this architectural masterpiece.
A Unique Architectural Pinnacle
The Jesus Christ tower represents the fourteenth completed structure in the ambitious Sagrada Família project. Designed by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, this sacred site was originally planned to have 18 towers in its final form. By the time of Gaudí’s death in 1926, only one tower had been completed, so the multi-year project extended far beyond the life of its creator. The current installation sequence demonstrates relentless efforts to realize the original vision.
The Architect’s Legacy Comes to Life
Gaudí left behind a revolutionary project that continues to inspire modern builders. Although external construction is nearly finished, interior finishing and engineering work are still ongoing. Project leaders have scheduled the official opening of the sanctuary for June 10, a date of special significance—it coincides with the centenary of Gaudí’s death. This symbolic timing underscores the deep connection between history and the present.
End of the Waiting Era
For decades, the Sagrada Família has undergone numerous changes in planning and execution. Installing the cross on the Jesus Christ tower marks a turning point, signaling the approach of the final phase. While the complete completion of all elements of the sanctuary is still ahead, this achievement indicates that the moment when the world will have access to one of humanity’s most ambitious architectural creations is near. The Sagrada Família revives the living side of a centuries-old heritage and leaves future generations an enduring monument of architectural genius.
