Stock Market Today: Dow Closes Above 50,000 As Nvidia Lands Atop Blue Chips (Live Coverage)

The stock market remained strong into the final hour and closed Friday’s session with hefty gains after three days of selling. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and other major stock indexes began their rally Friday morning in earnest, after the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment survey for February topped expectations.

The Dow ended the session with a 2.5% jump, or 1,207 points, and closed above the 50,000 milestone for the first time. Nvidia (NVDA) and Caterpillar (CAT) each rallied more than 7% in the Dow Jones index.

The S&P 500 also shined, with the benchmark index rising 2%. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq ended a three-day losing streak with its 2.2% increase. In the Nasdaq-100 index, semiconductor stocks Arm (ARM), AMD (AMD) and KLA (KLAC) led with increases of 8% to 12%.

Despite its robust gain, the Nasdaq remained below its 50-day moving average, but the S&P 500 reclaimed that closely watched line. Small caps bounced ferociously on Friday, with the Russell 2000 gaining 3.6%.

Winners squashed losers on the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange by roughly 4-to-1.

Amazon (AMZN) sank 5.6% on the stock market today after the e-commerce giant and Dow component missed profit forecasts with big artificial intelligence spending plans.

Data Center Play Hits A High

IBD 50 name Lumentum Holdings (LITE) bolted 8% higher and reached a record high on Friday. Shares have climbed for six straight sessions in heavier-than-average volume and have gained 49% so far this year.

Lumentum has outperformed 99% of names that Investor’s Business Daily tracks. Lumentum is far extended after bouncing off its 10-week moving average.

The fiber-optic and data center server stock was discussed on Friday’s episode of IBD Live. Lumentum reported fiscal second-quarter results on Tuesday with its profit quadrupling from a year ago and its sales rising 65%.

Tesla, Palantir Turn Around

Palantir Technologies (PLTR) saw a 4.5% pop on the stock market today. But the stock has been weak and is on pace for four straight weeks of losses. Palantir is about 15% below its 200-day moving average, which is a sell signal.

Tesla (TSLA) climbed more than 4% after two days of losses. But shares remain below their 50-day line.

Biogen (BIIB) popped nearly 8% and topped a buy zone from a prior flat base with a 185.17 entry. The biopharmaceuticals maker came in ahead of fourth-quarter earnings and sales estimates. The company also said it expects a 2026 profit range between $15.25 per share and $16.25 per share.

Stock Market Today: IBD 50 Movers

IBD 50 name nVent Electric (NVT) trimmed a larger loss to less than 2%. Shares fell even after the company’s fourth-quarter earnings met expectations with sales above estimates. It also gave full-year 2026 profit and sales forecast ranges with midpoints above forecasts, but investors must have wanted more.

Shares gave back a 10% gain and triggered a round-trip sell signal from a double-bottom base buy point at 109.68 Friday morning, before improving. The energy stock tested and bounced off its 50-day line and is bumping up to its 21-day exponential moving average.

Fellow IBD 50 name Vertiv Holdings (VRT) surged 9% higher and is back in buy range up to 199.14 of a prior double-bottom base with a 189.66 entry. Shares broke out in late January but the breakout collapsed and the stock hit the 8% sell rule from the entry.

The data center digital infrastructure provider is expected to report fourth-quarter results on Wednesday before the market opens.

Crude Oil, Fiber Optics Names Rally

Among commodities, WTI crude oil futures rallied 1% to around $64 a barrel as the U.S. held talks with Iran, mediated by Oman.

Gold was up 1.7% near $5,000 an ounce. Silver fell 1% to just under $76 an ounce.

Leading fiber-optic and chip-equipment stocks were some of the strongest performers in the technology sector. Lumentum (LITE) jumped to an all-time high and led IBD’s fiber-optic group to an intraday gain of more than 6%. The shares are poised for a sixth straight gain.

In the semiconductor-equipment group, Applied Materials (AMAT) rose 5% ahead of next week’s earnings report. The stock is still a picture of technical strength, holding support at its 10-week moving average and less than 10% off its all-time high.

Several other technology stocks are on the earnings calendar next week including Cisco Systems (CSCO), which has morphed into an AI infrastructure stock.

Also next week, watch for earnings reports from companies including Astera Labs (ALAB), Cloudflare (NET), Vertiv (VRT), AppLovin (APP), and** Arista Networks** (ANET).

Nvidia, Robinhood Early Leaders

Some beaten-down former leaders outperformed early. Nvidia (NVDA) bounced 5% after coming close to a test of its 200-day moving average near 169. The stock’s 50-day moving average near 183.50 is a potential resistance level to watch.

Headed into Friday, Nvidia was only 19% off its all-time high. But a pullback in shares of former leader Robinhood (HOOD) has been worse.

Robinhood shares jumped more than 10% early Friday, but the stock still is down more than 40% from its all-time high, mostly hurt by bitcoin’s recent sell-off. Crypto trading generates a significant portion of Robinhood’s revenue.

Bitcoin climbed nearly 8% to just over $68,00o after a harsh two-week sell-off.

Chip designer Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR), tracked in the same industry group as Nvidia, gapped up to an all-time high. A strong earnings report was the catalyst. Shares advanced 6% and crossed the 1,200 level after the company said fourth-quarter revenue increased 21% to $751.2 million.

Stock Market Predictions For 2026? Worthless. This Approach? Priceless.

After three straight declines, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) rallied more than 3% and bounced off its 50-day moving average.

In the solar group, Nextpower (NXT) marched up by 4%. The stock hasn’t made much progress after gapping out of a cup base on Jan. 28. Since then though, it’s been trading tightly near its 10-day moving average and still holding above a 112.74 buy point.

Among the Nasdaq-100 stocks, AppLovin (APP) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) rallied more than 6% and in excess of 5%, respectively, making them some of the best performers just after the market open.

Meanwhile, MercadoLibre (MELI) sold off nearly 3% in morning action.

Dow Jones Movers: Microsoft, Salesforce, Nvidia

Inside the blue chip index, Microsoft (MSFT) and Salesforce (CRM) rebounded nearly 2% each, while Nvidia (NVDA) rallied more than 3%, placing them among the best Dow Jones stocks in premarket trading.

On the downside, Apple (AAPL) and UnitedHealth Group (UNH) declined 0.3% and 1.3%, respectively, in early morning trading.

Stock Market Today: Amazon Plunges On Earnings

Shares of Amazon plunged 8.5% in early morning trading after the retail giant reported mixed fourth-quarter results. The company also provided a capital expenditures forecast that was well beyond expectations.

Amazon Chief Executive Andy Jassy said in a press release that the company expects to spend about $200 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, well ahead of the $146 billion that analysts were forecasting ahead of the report.

Amazon shares threatened to break below their long-term 200-day moving average.
