On Thursday, February 12, local time, artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic announced that it raised $30 billion in its latest funding round, valuing the company at $380 billion.

According to the company’s announcement, this funding round was led by Coatue and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC, with participation from D. E. Shaw Ventures, Dragoneer, Founders Fund, ICONIQ, and MGX.

Anthropic stated that the round includes “partial” funding from previously announced investments by Microsoft and Nvidia. Both companies had announced in November last year plans to invest up to $5 billion and $10 billion, respectively.

Anthropic said the newly raised funds will be used to support infrastructure expansion, research and development, and ongoing investments in enterprise-grade products.

This latest funding round has doubled Anthropic’s valuation, which was $183 billion after its previous round in September last year.

The $30 billion raised in this round is second only to its competitor OpenAI, which last year completed a funding round exceeding $40 billion led by SoftBank, setting a record for the largest private tech funding in history.

OpenAI may soon break and significantly surpass its record. Media reports indicate that OpenAI is in negotiations with investors for a new funding round that could reach approximately $100 billion.

The high costs of developing and training AI models are a key reason why Anthropic and OpenAI continue to raise large sums of money, as they must invest heavily in computing resources such as Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs).

Meanwhile, Anthropic and OpenAI are also engaged in fierce competition with tech giants like Google. Google has announced plans to spend up to $185 billion on capital expenditures this year and is heavily investing in its Gemini product.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI researchers and executives. Unlike OpenAI, which has gained widespread popularity with ChatGPT and focuses on the consumer market, Anthropic has achieved early success in the enterprise customer market.

On Thursday, Anthropic also announced that, based on last year’s revenue of approximately $10 billion, its annualized revenue has increased to $14 billion.

Additionally, Claude Code’s annualized revenue has grown to $2.5 billion, with enterprise subscriptions quadrupling since the beginning of this year. Enterprise users contribute more than half of Claude Code’s revenue.
