A PIECE OF NIGERIAN HISTORY

1. Who was the first Nigerian politician to be charged for treason?
2. What were the charges?
3. Why did he send recruits to Ghana for training?
4. Why was he pardoned 3 years later?
Answer 🤷🏾‍♂️
Chief Obafemi Awolowo was the first Nigerian politician charged with treason in 1962.
Charges: Treasonable felony, conspiracy to commit a felony, and conspiracy to effect an unlawful purpose.
He allegedly sent recruits to Ghana for military training to overthrow the federal government.
He was pardoned in 1966 by Gen. Yakubu Gowon after a military coup, serving about 3 years.
So his plan failed and it was termed an Igbo coup!
