OpenAI has begun implementing an age prediction feature in ChatGPT. If a minor is using the chatbot, the account will be subject to “appropriate approaches and safety measures for teenagers.”
We’re rolling out age prediction on ChatGPT to help determine when an account likely belongs to someone under 18, so we can apply the right experience and safeguards for teens.
Adults who are incorrectly placed in the teen experience can confirm their age in Settings > Account.…

If the algorithm mistakenly assigns a teen status to an adult, this can be corrected by verifying through the Persona service.
The feature is being rolled out worldwide. It aims to reduce teenagers’ contact with sensitive and potentially harmful content.
“This also allows us to treat adults as adults and use tools as they wish, within safety limits,” — the announcement states.
How it works
To assess age, the model analyzes behavioral factors, such as activity time in chat. If OpenAI is unsure of the user’s age, it automatically selects the safer option.
Additional safety measures can be viewed in account settings. They restrict the display of materials containing:
scenes of violence and cruelty;
viral challenges that may encourage risky or harmful behavior;
role-playing of sexual or violent nature;
images of self-harm;
promotion of unrealistic beauty standards, strict diets, and appearance criticism.
The initiative is based on scientific data about child development and considers the specifics of teenage psychology.
In addition to the new service, parental controls are available. They allow setting “quiet hours” or configuring notifications when signs of acute distress are detected.
Recall that in September, OpenAI announced the development of technology to determine age.
After its integration, plans include adding erotic content to ChatGPT.
