Nigeria's year-on-year inflation rate dropped in December. The stats bureau adjusted its calculation methodology to sidestep the distortion that would've come from the prior year's base effect. This recalibration prevented an artificial bump that typically occurs when switching reference periods. The revised approach gives a clearer picture of actual price momentum in the economy.

Data methodology adjustment causes the inflation rate to drop? That move is pretty impressive. Nigeria's approach is quite good.

Nigeria changed the algorithm... Basically, it's just a different way of calculating numbers. From this perspective, it looks like inflation has "decreased." I don't buy it.

Can Nigeria's monetary policy change really reduce inflation? This number game is played skillfully.
