Game security incidents are evolving with new tricks. The popular competitive game Rainbow Six Siege under French gaming giant Ubisoft experienced a serious hacking attack, and the entire process from discovery to resolution is quite illustrative.

According to reports, hackers successfully infiltrated the core system of the game, conducting a "mass drop" for all online players—each logged-in player was given 2 billion in-game R6 points, along with a bunch of rare items. Even more outrageous, the hackers also took control of the game's announcement system and mute mechanism, essentially holding the keys to the game's backend.

On December 27, the Rainbow Six Siege team openly acknowledged the vulnerability on social media. The next day, they responded by directly suspending the game servers and trading marketplace, and began rolling back the points. The official statement clarified that players would not be banned for using these stolen points, as a form of protection for the affected players.

The game is currently in a small-scale testing phase to ensure quality before relaunch, making sure account data hasn't been tampered with. It’s worth noting that Rainbow Six Siege holds a significant position within Ubisoft, with an average of over 34,000 daily active players in December. The impact of this incident on the user base is quite substantial.

From virtual points theft to system privilege hijacking, this incident bears many similarities to on-chain security issues—both involve protecting digital assets and the risks of centralized systems. It serves as a reminder to both players and developers.
