## ETH Dencun Upgrade: Ethereum Enters a New Era of Scalability



Ethereum is about to undergo its most significant technical upgrade since the Merge—Dencun (Cancun-Deneb). The code name is derived from the two brightest stars in the constellation Cygnus, symbolizing a milestone for this upgrade. At the core of it all is an innovation called EIP-4844—Proto-Danksharding technology.

### Why is everyone paying attention to this ETH upgrade?

Simply put, the Dencun upgrade promises three key changes: **transaction speeds 10-100 times faster, significant reduction in gas fees, and truly usable Layer 2 scaling solutions**.

What does this mean for users? Currently, executing complex operations on Ethereum costs dozens of dollars; after the upgrade, it could be just a few cents. For developers, this opens up a whole new space for application development—complex decentralized applications are no longer hindered by high costs.

### How Proto-Danksharding Changes the Game

EIP-4844 is the key innovation of this upgrade. It introduces a new concept called "blobs"—a special way of storing transaction data.

Traditional Ethereum approach: all transaction data is permanently stored on-chain. The new approach: this data is temporarily stored in the Beacon Chain and automatically deleted after a period. ### Timeline and Current Progress

According to the official roadmap, the ETH Dencun upgrade will be rolled out in phases:

- January 17: Activation on the Goerli testnet
- January 30: Activation on the Sepolia testnet
- February 7: Activation on the Holesky testnet

Data feedback from these testnets will directly influence the final form of the mainnet upgrade. Currently, development has reached the Devnet 12 testing stage.

It’s worth noting that this upgrade was originally scheduled for Q4 2023 but was delayed to Q1 2024 after thorough discussions among developers during core consensus meetings, ensuring code quality and ecosystem readiness.

### From Merge to Dencun: The Evolution of Ethereum 2.0

Understanding the significance of Dencun requires a look at the entire evolution path of Ethereum 2.0:

**December 2020**, Beacon Chain launched, introducing PoS consensus infrastructure. **September 2022**, the Merge completed, officially switching Ethereum to proof-of-stake, reducing energy consumption by over 99.5%. **April 2023**, Shanghai/Capella upgrade, enabling staking withdrawals and activating the liquid staking track. **Q1 2024**, Dencun upgrade is set to launch, addressing scalability challenges.

Each step is building towards a "faster, cheaper, and more secure" Ethereum.

### Practical Impact of the Dencun Upgrade on Users and Developers

**For ordinary traders**: transaction costs on Layer 2 will drop from the current $0.1-$1 to $0.01-$0.1. Wallet interactions, NFT operations, and DeFi transactions will become economically feasible.

**For developers**: proto-danksharding breaks through previous data storage bottlenecks. Applications previously impossible due to high costs now have technical and economic feasibility. High-frequency interaction scenarios like gaming, social, and data applications become possible.

**For Layer 2 ecosystems**: solutions like Arbitrum, Optimism, Starknet will enter a true "growth phase." Lower transaction fees mean significantly reduced user adoption costs, potentially revitalizing DApp ecosystem activity.

**Throughput expectations**: Ethereum mainnet’s current theoretical limit is about 15 TPS. Post-upgrade, while the mainnet itself may not directly surpass this, Layer 2 solutions can reach thousands of TPS. User experience could approach that of centralized exchanges.

### Further Outlook: Full Danksharding

Proto-Danksharding is just a stepping stone. Future full Danksharding will shard Ethereum into 64 independent shards, each handling transactions and data separately. This will bring **100-1000 times scalability potential**, pushing Ethereum toward becoming a truly global settlement layer.

After the Dencun upgrade, Ethereum development teams will continue iterating on shard design, ultimately realizing Vitalik Buterin’s original full vision.

The complexity of the upgrade also introduces risks:

**Technical risks**: Bugs in new code could cause network anomalies. Although multiple testnet runs have been conducted, edge cases on the mainnet still pose a possibility.
