My takeaway from The Perfect Neighbor on netflix is that there’s a LOT of power behind cops wearing bodycams and it has nothing to do with the behavior of the police. I’ll explain -
When I heard about this story in the news I was on the side of the shooter. Obnoxious kids were tormenting her outside her house everyday. Probably gang members and drug dealers. Angry black mother pounding on a little old white lady’s door. She was all alone, scared, and shot her. Just defending herself. My mother is the nicest woman in the world and if she was in that situation I’d hope she’d have the right and ability to defend herself.
Then then documentary airs…
The kids are like 10 years old, some white, many black, all just kids being kids playing backyard football and tag and riding bikes. The homeowner is a total Karen, calls the cops dozens of times on the kids for no reason. It’s not even her yard, she has no right to complain about anything. Drops F and N bombs on these little kids. The black mother was rightfully mad, not armed, not even threatening. She wasn’t on drugs, she had a poodle. The old lady Karen has screws loose, she was the problem for years, she was just renting she could have moved out. Nobody needed to get shot. It wasn’t one event it, was a couple years worth of drama she caused that led to the shot that killed an innocent mother.
Bodycam footage doesn’t lie. The media can’t spin video footage easily. Video can challenge your biases and preconceived assumptions. And that’s why even in Florida she’s in jail for 25 years.
