How long can you live in the U.S. with a retirement fund of 1 million dollars? Ranked by state.

Abstract generation in progress

I just looked at a data analysis, and the difference in how long $1 million in retirement savings plus social security can last varies greatly from state to state.

The Three Most Money-Consuming States:

  • Hawaii: Can only last 12.5 years (monthly expenses $2761)
  • California: 16 years (monthly average $2269)
  • Massachusetts: $2340 per month (annual average)

The Three Most Economical States:

  • West Virginia: 88.8 years (monthly average $1833)
  • Mississippi: 87.2 years (monthly $1784)
  • Louisiana: 76.5 years (monthly average $1785)

The data in the middle segment is also very interesting - 36 states can sustain themselves for 30 years, with popular retirement destinations like Texas, North Carolina, and Georgia having monthly expenses of $1800-$1900, which can last for 40-50 years.

Key Point: The same amount of money can last until age 99 in West Virginia without pressure, whereas in Hawaii it might run out in the early 60s. Not all retirement plans are the same.
