Crypto platforms operate in a regulatory gray zone. Your assets aren’t automatically protected like they would be at a traditional brokerage (SIPC coverage) or bank (FDIC insurance). The differences are huge:

Custodial wallets (assets held on exchange) → Platform fails = your money might get stuck in bankruptcy

Staking rewards → Generally safer than lending, depends on the crypto

Lend-earn accounts → High risk. You don’t always know who’s borrowing your crypto or what they’re doing with it

Non-custodial wallets → You control it, no platform risk, but one lost password = game over

Bottom line:

If you’re chasing yield on crypto platforms, understand what you’re actually signing up for. The SEC’s message is clear: “We’re coming for unregistered securities, and platforms need to warn you properly.” Until that happens, moving assets off exchanges or out of lending schemes isn’t paranoia—it’s just math.
