Don't remind me again today

Elon Musk just clarified his South African roots on X: he's actually British/English descent, not Afrikaner. The Tesla CEO even drew a parallel to LOTR author J.R.R. Tolkien, who was also born in South Africa (Bloemfontein, 1892).

Apparently this distinction matters more than we thought—the mix-up comes from Musk being born in Pretoria in 1971. Worth noting: Afrikaners trace back to 17th-century Dutch/German/French settlers and speak Afrikaans, while English South Africans have 19th-century British roots and speak... well, English. Pretty different cultural identities.

Bonus: Musk is a legit Tolkien nerd. Dude even cited LOTR when courting Grimes back in the day. And yeah, he's still annoyed about that whole 'emerald mine' rumor his dad allegedly had—calls it "fake" every chance he gets.
