The United States refuses to provide Japan with reciprocal tariff exemptions.

On Monday, people familiar with the matter revealed that the United States rejected Japan’s request for a full exemption from 10% reciprocal tariffs and country-specific tariffs in recent negotiations. U.S. officials, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Bassente, said in talks with Japan’s chief negotiator Ryomasa Akasawa in Washington last week that the Trump administration intends to cut only 14 percent of country-specific tariffs, which are suspended until early July, sources said. In the second round of negotiations, the United States stressed that depending on the progress of the negotiations, only an extension of the 90-day moratorium or a 14% tariff reduction would be considered. Tokyo has been seeking the full elimination of reciprocal tariffs, 25 percent tariffs on automobiles, and 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum. Washington has said it will not negotiate a global base tariff of 10 percent or tariffs on automobiles and steel products. ( gold ten )
