Do you really know what today is? Do you know the interesting story behind Bitcoin Pizza Day?
A man named Laszlo Hanyecz, who is known as the “Bitcoin Pizza Guy.” In 2010, when Bitcoin was still a relatively unknown digital currency, Hanyecz made a post on a Bitcoin forum offering to pay 10,000 BTC (which was worth around $41 at the time) for two large pizzas.
To his surprise, someone took him up on the offer, and Hanyecz sent them the Bitcoin in exchange for the pizzas. At the time, he probably didn’t realize that he had just made one of the most expensive food purchases in history, as the 10,000 BTC he spent on the pizzas would be worth over $260 million today! What an expensive pizza!
Despite the fact that he spent an incredible amount of money on those pizzas, Hanyecz doesn’t regret his decision, saying that he was happy to contribute to the early adoption of Bitcoin and help it gain more mainstream acceptance. Today, May 22, is celebrated as “Bitcoin Pizza Day” in honor of this funny and historic event in the world of cryptocurrency.
